Sketch Pad One-Shot: Fish Out of Water

Class times/dates: 7–10pm, Wednesday, November 16th and Wednesday, November 30th
Class size: 12 students maximum
Class length: 3 hours (6 hours total) 
Prerequisite: All levels of sketch writers are welcome! You should have some experience writing sketches, but you do not need to have taken SketchPad 1 to attend this 2-week session.  Advanced sketch writers will benefit from the intense focus on one type of scene and the rewrite and editing session in the second week.

Are you a fan of John Belushi’s Samurai?  Key and Peele’s Substitute Teacher? Chris Farley’s motivational speaker? They all have one thing in common – they’re “Fish Out of Water” scenes.

This two-class session will deep-dive into one of the best known sketch formats, putting the insane character in the sane world or vice versa.  In the first class, we’ll look at some of the best examples of this kind of sketch, how do FOW make scenes work (in both writing and in improv when you find yourself in such a scene), how to design our fish AND put them in the right water. 

Then you’ll then have 2 weeks to explore your new “fish” and write a first draft of your own Fish Out of Water sketch.  In the second session, we’ll review your sketches and focus on re-writes and edits to really make them sing.
