THE DUTY COLLECTIVE
Masters of New Wave - only 20 years behind!
The Duty Collective (Barbara Scott, Paul Killam, Zoe Galvez) formed in the early 80's at an Eastern Art school when each of the members was kicked out of separate classes at the same time (painting, metallurgy and stained glass) and met in the halls.
"The Collective" rejected the Marxist leanings of many of their compatriots and observed what they called, "the redesign of human society from being idea-based to purely image-based". They saw themselves as a "sound generating syndicate" for the new society.
After the initial success of their album Now Future, they followed up with a series of 4 EP's they called Ambient March Structures For Movement, featuring 15-18 minute songs. It sent shockwaves through the music industry and sold millions. After going into seclusion in the top floor of an office building in Hamburg, they emerged with 78 very short songs. While not as successful as their first 2 projects, The Short Album made many critics top ten lists in 1991.
From that point on, The Duty Collective has made a point of taking odd-numbered years off from touring and recording. We are very lucky it's 2008.
