PRESS RELEASE: SF Mayor Newsom Declares "BATS Improv Day"

Nov. 10 Named "BATS Improv Day" in honor of theatre company's 20th anniversary

San Francisco (November 10, 2006) - On the occaision of its 20th Anniversary, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom declared today "BATS Improv Day" in an official proclamation from city hall.

Here is the text of that proclamation:

WHEREAS, San Francisco’s first improvisational theatre workshop on the Theatresports format culminated in a sold-out performance on November 10, 1986; and

WHEREAS, players from that workshop and performance were so inspired by what they learned, that they formed Bay Area Theatresports—today known as BATS Improv; and

WHEREAS, BATS is committed to the performance, teaching, development and promotional of improvisational theatre; and

WHEREAS, BATS is known for creating innovative theatre that tells a story collaboratively, from comedy to drama, with dynamic storytelling that both engages and entertains audiences; and

WHEREAS, the BATS School of Improvisational Theatre has provides top-notch performance-based training combined with the belief that learning improvisational theatre skills can have a positive impact on people’s lives beyond the stage, such as at home, work, and in interpersonal relationships; and

WHEREAS, BATS is today one of the nation’s largest non-profit year-round improvisational theatre companies, performing for more than 12,000 audience members and attracting more than 1,300 workshop enrollments each year; now

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I Gavin Newsom, Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco, do hereby proclaim November 10, 2006, as…
