With both the BATS On-The-Go team and improvImpact, Rich helps individuals and organizations explore change and increase their performance in communication, collaboration and creativity. Rich draws on his 15 years of experience as an improv coach, business consultant, and engineer to bring Applied Improv activities into organizations. These tools provide a low-risk, high-impact environment that enables whole group engagement called “group flow”. His focus on people and outcomes provides a variety of experiences challenging each person in different ways.
As a performer, Rich continues to improvise in a variety of formats including Theatersports, Micetro, The Life Game, Gorilla Theatre, The Harold, and other Long-Form plays and musicals. In addition, Rich is a lighting improvisor and a musical improvisor accompanying scenes and songs with a mix of electronic keyboards and guitar.
As an Applied Improvisation thought leader, Rich is on the Program Comittee for the AIN Japan 2009 conference and the AIN North America 2009 Conference. You can see Rich present on Applied Improv at the Bay Area Organizational Development - Best in the West Conference 2009 and the Applied Improv Network 2009 in Portland Oregon. Q & A with Richard Cox
First BATS Show: It was a Theatersports show in October 2002. That night I performed my favorite scene ever (to this day). It was a scene repeated in three genres that ended with a broadway musical and a song that I still can sing.
Favorite Formats: Long-Form (improvised plays), The Life Game, Theatersports, Spontaneous Broadway, Disco Romance, American Musical
Best Moment on the BATS Stage: Shows when nobody remembers what time it is and the story just tells itself, when everyone is so in sync--that is when the magic is happening.
Improv Advice: Never stop learning, or let yourself think you have it all figured out and keep having fun!
Favorite Movies: The Princess Bride, Gilda, Double Indemnity, The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Highlander, North by Northwest, Rebecca, odd numbered Star Trek movies, Oscar, The Lord of the Rings extended DVD edition
Favorite Music: Grateful Dead, big band / swing, outsider music, folk, bluegrass, 80's pop, old timey music
